the ruins of San Beturián

the ruins of San Beturián (more info)

The Monastery of San Beturián or Victorián (Pyrenees of Huesca) is one of the oldest in Spain. The limestock rock faces of the Peña Montañesa protect this monastery which was the cultural and the spiritual centre of Sobrarbe for a millenium. From the VIth century, founded by San Victorián de Asan.

San Victorián settled for a time in France before founding the monastery (now Saint Victorian). The monastery was restored by Sancho III el Mayor (XIth century). It knew a long period of great importance both in ecclesiastical and in political ways. The confiscation of Mendizábal, in 1835 was its finishing nail. Today it is a pile of ruins in a beautiful landscape. It seems that the Government of Aragon wants to recover it. 2009-06-21.
