Puerta del Angel
On the north side of Santiago Cathedral in Bilbao (Basque Country, Spain) lies the gateway to the cloister, known as Puerta del Angel, which takes its name from an altarpiece dedicated to the Michael Archangel that was in the cloister. Its beautiful Gothic door is the early 16th century and was restored in the late 20th century. A mullion separates two entrances sheltered under depressed elliptical arches, over which extends a broad tympanum decorated with reliefs inspired by the flamboyant symbol of Basque lauburu. The archivolts, that flanking two decreasing pillars, have in the upper an ogee extrados that finish in finial that frames a scallop or pilgrim shell, which reflects the late addition of this church to the Jacobean tradition. For this reason the Puerta del Angel, is also called the Door of the Pilgrims. 2009-06-26.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!...to everybody.
