Oriental Pearl Tower
The Oriental Pearl TV Tower is located in Pudong Park in Lujiazui by the side of Huangpu river, opposite The Bund of Shanghai (China). The tower, surrounded by the Yangpu Bridge in the northeast and the Nanpu Bridge in the southwest, creates a picture of 'twin dragons playing with pearls'. The entire scene is a photographic jewel that excites the imagination and attracts thousands of visitors year-round.
It was designed by Jia Huan Cheng of the Shanghai Modern Architectural Design Co. Ltd. Construction began in 1991 and the tower was completed in 1995. At 468 m (1,535 feet) high, it is the tallest tower in Asia, and the third tallest TV and radio tower in the world surpassed in height only by towers in Toronto, Canada and Moscow, Russia.
The design of the building is based on a verse of the Tang Dynasty poem Pipa Song by Bai Juyi about the wonderful sprinkling music sound by a pipa instrument, like pearls, big and small faling on a jade plate. The Oriental Pearl Tower consits of big and small balls, 11 in total. It is as if they are pearls falling down from the sky above on a jade plate, represented by the Huangpu river.
