Clonmacnoise monastery
The ancient monastic site of Clonmacnoise (the Irish Cluain Mhic Nos) is on the east side of the River Shannon and this monastery is one of Europe's most highly regarded sites of its kind. It was founded in 545 AD by St. Ciarán, (Kieran in English). The monastic ruins are the most extensive of their kind in Ireland. The tower of Temple Finghin is an integral part of the building which is thought to date from around 1160-70. 2004-07-27.
