Athlone
Athlone (Baile Átha Luain in Irish, meaning "town of the ford of Luan") lies on the River Shannon near the southern extremity of Lough Ree (Republic of Ireland). Athlone stands close to the geographical centre of Ireland, on the borders of two counties and provinces. Although the river forms the historic border between County Roscommon and County Westmeath, the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898 included the town entirely in Westmeath. There are quite a few things to do and see in town, so it is worth it to stop over on your way from Dublin to Galway. You can see in this photo St Peter and Paul's church on the west bank of the Shannon. 2004-07-27.
