It is populated by diverse people, amongst them local Berbers, black Slaves, and Jews who originally flew from Jerusalem around 100 BC. The island is connected to the mainland by a road, originally built by the Romans at a point where the water was just 1 m deep, and by a ferry transporting people and vehicles. This photo was taken from the ferry Joff-Ajim. 1995-07-27.
